Five Reasons Why Your Air Conditioner Isn't Cooling Your House

When it’s a scorching summer morning in McHenry, nothing could be worse than realizing your cooling system isn’t functioning the way it is meant to. The last thing you need to do is request AC help. But your AC is an exceptionally intricate system, so it can be difficult to deduce what’s causing the trouble on your own.

That’s why Jett's Heating & Air Inc. crafted this handbook to help you see what could be taking place with your AC. From here, you’ll learn some common reasons your place is feeling uncomfortable. And even though a few of these are fairly painless DIY projects, you may need to call in a pro for cooling system repair.

And if that’s the case, Jett's Heating & Air Inc. is ready to assist. Here are five reasons why your air conditioner may not be cooling your home in McHenry.

1. Your Thermostat Settings Are Wrong

Every family sets their thermostat a touch differently to suit their personal needs. Despite that, many families make the mistake of setting their device to “On” as opposed to “Auto.” Under this setting, the fan in your AC will continue to produce an air current even when you’ve achieved your preferred temperature.

This can seem like your system is blowing out room temperature air, when in reality it’s only employing the fan more frequently than needed. Change this setting and work out if things are different.

2. Your AC Needs a Routine Cleaning

There are two main spaces to check for dirt or dust accumulation when your HVAC doesn’t feel like it is operating correctly.

Before anything else, take a look at your HVAC filter. If you don’t switch out your filter routinely, buildup can make it more difficult for air to move through and cool your space. If your filter is noticeably dirty or dusty, it’s likely time to replace it. (And in general, you need to replace it about once every three months at a minimum.)

If your filter is looking clean, move to your outside unit. Double check there’s a couple of feet of clearing around your air conditioner and clear away plants or litter around it. This part of your cooling system discharges the heat from within your space. If the coils outside are congested, you won’t be feeling comfortable indoors.

We suggest booking professional air conditioner maintenance yearly to keep your system operating like it should and to keep your warranty valid.

3. Your Unit is Releasing Refrigerant

Refrigerant is the substance that cools down the air in your house. It cycles between your internal and outdoor system elements to absorb and discharge heat, to help your house get the right temperature. If there is an opening along that system, you won’t be cool again until you schedule professional air conditioning repair.

Signs of a refrigerant leak include a decrease in conditioned air, larger power charges, frozen evaporator coils and unusual hissing noises originating from your HVAC.

If you feel refrigerant might be leaking, call Jett's Heating & Air Inc. for air conditioner repair as soon as possible. Refrigerant can also be detrimental to your family’s health.

4. One or More Elements Need to Be Replaced

Your air conditioner contains a couple crucial parts. These include the blower, evaporator coils, compressor, fan, condenser coils and expansion valve. If any one of these is not working as it should, your home comfort crumbles.

Our Jett's Heating & Air Inc. pros are trained and skilled in all areas of HVAC. They can help you locate and mend any problem.

5. Your AC Has to Be Updated

If your equipment is over 10 years old, it might be time to research new air conditioner installation. As your system gets up there in years, it sadly won’t run as well as it did when it was new. And it might be making your space too warm.

If your HVAC unit is newer but still isn’t properly cooling your home, it could be too small for your home. HVAC systems are not all the same size. A system that’s undersized simply can’t help a space the way an accurately sized HVAC can.
