Five Reasons Why Your Air Conditioner Isn't Cooling Your Residence

July 10, 2020

When it’s a warm summer day in McHenry, nothing feels worse than realizing your cooling system isn’t functioning the way it is supposed to. The last thing you need to do is call for AC repair. But your AC is a quite involved system, so it can be challenging to discover what’s causing the issue on your own.

That’s why Jett's Heating & Air Inc. created this guide to help you understand what could be going on with your AC. From here, you’ll see a few typical explanations for why your space is feeling uncomfortable. And though some of these are straightforward DIY tasks, you may have to bring in an expert for cooling system repair.

And if you need us, Jett's Heating & Air Inc. is ready to assist. Here are five reasons why your air conditioner may not be cooling your house in McHenry.

1. Your Thermostat Settings Are Wrong

Every family adjusts their thermostat a bit differently to fit their personal needs. However, many homeowners make the misstep of setting their device to “On” rather than “Auto.” With this setting, the fan in your HVAC system will continue to produce an air current even once you’ve attained your preferred temperature.

This can appear like your AC is distributing untreated air, when in reality it’s simply employing the fan on a more regular basis than required. Adjust this setting and determine if things change.

2. Your HVAC Needs to Be Cleaned

There are two central spaces to inspect for dirt or dust collection when your HVAC doesn’t seem to be working as it should.

Firstly, check out your HVAC filter. If you don’t swap out your filter on a regular basis, accumulated dirt can make it more labor intensive for air to travel through and lower the temperature your home. If your filter is clearly dirty or dusty, it’s probably time to replace it. (And in general, you have to replace it about once every three months at a minimum.)

If your filter is looking clean, go to your outside unit. Find out if there’s adequate clearing around it and clean up plants or litter stuck there. This piece of your cooling system releases the heat from your rooms. If the coils outside are closed off, you won’t be cool indoors.

We recommend scheduling professional air conditioner maintenance each year to keep your unit working smoothly and to keep your warranty valid.

3. Your Unit is Releasing Refrigerant

Refrigerant is the component that conditions the air in your home. It cycles between your inside and outdoor system pieces to absorb and let off heat, to help your house keep cool. If there is a break along that path, you won’t be cool again until you schedule professional air conditioning repair.

Indications of a refrigerant leak include a decrease in cooled air, climbing electric expenses, frozen evaporator coils and unusual hissing noises arising from your HVAC.

If you feel refrigerant may be leaking, call Jett's Heating & Air Inc. for HVAC repair as soon as possible. Refrigerant can also be hazardous to your family’s health.

4. One or More Elements Should Be Replaced

Your AC includes a couple key elements. These include the blower, evaporator coils, compressor, fan, condenser coils and expansion valve. If one of these is failing, your home comfort is hurt.

Our Jett's Heating & Air Inc. experts are trained and knowledged in HVAC. They can help you diagnose and repair any trouble.

5. Your Air Conditioner Should Be Updated

If your AC is over 10 years old, it might be about time to look into new air conditioner installation. As your system ages, it sadly won’t function as well as it did when it was new. And it could be making your place uncomfortable.

If your AC is on the younger side but still isn’t properly cooling your home, it may be the wrong size for your space. Air conditioners are made in different sizes. An air conditioner that’s undersized absolutely can’t help a space the way an accurately sized air conditioner can.
