Cooling Refrigerants of the Future. Refrigerants are liquids stored in your air conditioner’s coils that cool and dehumidify indoor air. If there weren’t refrigerants, there wouldn’t be air conditioning. For a long time, the most common AC refrigerant was R-22 (Freon), but in 2012 the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) mandated the phase-out of R-22 through the Clean Air Act. By 2020, R-22 will no longer be legal to produce due to its negative effects on the environment. Introducing R-410A To decrease environmental impacts, all Lennox® products are now compatible with the new R-410A AC refrigerant. R-410A is EPA-recognized and contains no chlorine, which means it’s ozone-friendly. You can feel at ease using this refrigerant in Crystal Lake because it’ll help make your system perform efficiently, reliably and quietly, and deliver the same cool comfort in the warmer months. Additional Considerations If your AC or heat pump was manufactured anytime before 2010, it may not be R-410A-compatible. You may want to investigate upgrading your cooling system before R-22 is ultimately unavailable. The old refrigerant will become scarce in the next few years, costing you more to use your system effectively. The Lennox products we offer at Jett's Heating & Air Inc. work with R-410A, so you know we have an AC or heat pump that better meets your needs. Be sure to steer clear of”alternate refrigerants that claim to work in R-22 systems. These include R-407C, R-438A and R-422, all of which can actually compromise your system’s performance.
